METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DESULFURIZING A GAS

A foul gas containing H2S is brought into the presence of SO2 in a first stage (12) to permit the reaction between SO2 and H2S to form water and elemental sulfur. The SO2 is solubilized in an absorbent composition which includes a solvent for both SO2 and H2S. The gas is then passed to a second stage (14) where any remaining H2S is removed by aqueous catalytic reaction. The apparatus utilized to carry out the present invention preferably includes a two-stage column in which the first stage (12) provides the absorbent material containing solubilized SO2 for reaction with the H2S in the foul gas. During the SO2 extraction stage the major portion of the H2S is removed from the foul gas. The gas is then conveyed from the first stage (12) to a second stage (14) which comprises a conventional aqueous catalytic scrubbing operation where the remainder of the H2S is removed.
