The axle mounting has an elastomeric pad (5) between the outer axle bearing housing (3) and the inner axle bearing housing (4). The spring constant of the pad is greater than that of the bogie suspension springs (2). The pad forms a shell over and encloses the top of the inner axle bearing housing. The vertical stiffness of the pad is chosen such that the vertical movement of the axle at frequencies greater than 100 Hz. is less than 1 mm. High frequency vibrations arising from the travel of the wheels (7) over the rails esp. during high acceleration are not transmitted through the vehicle body (1) to the passengers.
