PURPOSE: To provide a rare gas discharge lamp properly constituting an adjacent conductor to improve startability also to make stabilization capable of a positive column and to provide a lighting device using this rare gas discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION: Rare gas is sealed as an emitting substance in a bulb 1 mounted to be sealed with an electrode 2 in both end parts, to additionally provide an adjacent conductor 5 along a tube axial direction in an external surface of this bulb. In this rare gas discharge lamp, separating dimension L along the tube axial direction between an end part of the adjacent conductor and a point end of the electrode is set to 5mm or more 15mm or less, and further the width W of this adjacent conductor is set to 5% or more 50% or less the periphery of the bulb. In this way, the adjacent conductor induces a discharge when started, to enable starting voltage to lower down, and further by pulling aside a positive column by the adjacent conductor during stable lighting, a discharge is stabilized. |
