A gas generator for an air bag which includes a short cylindrical container (21) for a gas generator having a central chamber (34), a ring-like outside chamber (35) communicating with the central chamber (34) and encompassing it and emission holes (36) for emitting a gas from the outside chamber (35) to inflate an air bag, a gas generating agent (51) accommodated in the ring-like outside chamber (35), ignition means (10, 40) accommodated in the central chamber (34) for burning the gas generating agent (51), and heat-insulating members (22, 23), (37, 38) for thermally insulating the gas generating agent (51) inside the outside chamber (35) from the container (21), disposed at least at the upper portion and/or at the lower portion of the inside of the outside chamber (35). Because the heat-insulating members (22, 23), (37, 38) are disposed at least the upper portion and/or the lower portion of the inside of the outside chamber (35) of the container (21), the influences of the ambient temperature on the gas generating agent accommodation space can be reduced and a combustion speed within a predetermined range can be obtained.
