A machine for building a formation protection layer beneath a railway track 6 is provided with a device 16 for inserting additional materials, e.g. cement, onto the formation. This device comprises a screw conveyor 19, arranged horizontally beneath the track, and extending at an angle to the longitudinal direction of the machine. A cylindrical feed duct 26 supports the feed screw, and has a number of discharge openings spaced apart along the duct. The duct may be enclosed by a dosing cover (29, fig. 5), which may be rotated relative to the duct. Water may be supplied through hoses 39; numeral 33 denotes a formation mixer. Numeral 24 denotes a feed opening; 25 denotes a conveyor drive. The conveyor may be fed from a cyclone separator (34, fig. 2); an additional conveyor may be used to supply another material, e.g. lime.
