PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new gene coding the malic acid enzyme of aloe, and capable of being introduced into the cell of a plant such as rice to increase the malic acid enzyme activity of the plant and improve the dryness resistance of the whole body of the plant and the accompanied productivity. CONSTITUTION: This new aloe malic acid enzyme gene codes an aloe malic acid enzyme having an aloe malic acid enzyme activity and expressed by an amino acid sequence containing an amino acid sequence of formula I, an amino acid sequence containing an amino acid sequence of formula II or a sequence produced by subjecting one of the amino acid sequences to the addition, removal or substitution of one or plural amino acids, and can be introduced into the cell of a plant such as rice to increase the malic acid enzyme activity of the plant, express the malic acid enzyme activity of a CAM (an orpine type organic acid metabolism) excellent in dryness resistance in the plant, impart a CAM type photosynthesis ability to the plant, and improve the dryness resistance of the plant and the accompanied productivity. The gene is obtained from the cDNA library of the aloe. |
