PURPOSE: To provide a coating method which can form a uniform high quality film by stable application, especially suitable for making a raw material for a magnetic recording medium, in coating with the use of an extrusion type coater head. CONSTITUTION: The feed velocity V of a web W is defined to be 50-400m/min. The effective length L of a rear lip surface 6 of a coater head 2 which conducts the smoothing of a coating material 1 in cooperation with the web W is defined to be 2-20mm. The viscosity of the coating material 1 at the front end 6a of the rear lip surface 6 isη(P), and coating is carried out in a state in which 7L/V<ηis satisfied.
