An apparatus (6) for practicing golf swings is provided having a pair of spaced parallel side members (11, 12), a first cross-member (13) attached to an end of each one of the pair of side members (11, 12), a second cross-member (14) attached to the opposite end of each one of the pair of side members (11, 12) in such a manner that the second cross-member (14) is free to be rotated relative to said opposite end of the pair of side members (11, 12), a sheet of simulated grass material (21) on a rectangular sheet of substantially inelastic material (20) which is attached to the first and second cross-members (13, 14) for supporting a golf ball and a mechanism (34, 35, 36) for locking the second cross-member (14) in position relative to the ends of said side members (11, 12) after a predetermined amount of tension has been applied to the rectangular sheet of material (20) by rotating the second cross-member (14) in a direction which results in applying tension to the rectangular sheet of material (20).
