Process for preparing 1,3-difluorobenzene by means of the catalytic elimination of halogen from a 1,3-difluorohalobenzene, by reacting a 1,3-difluorohalobenzene of the formula (1) <IMAGE> (1) in which R1 to R4 are H, Cl or Br, and at least one of the radicals R1 to R4 is Cl or Br, in the presence of a palladium catalyst and of an amine, where appropriate in the presence of water or of an organic solvent which is inert towards the reactants and the reaction conditions, with hydrogen under pressure and at temperatures from about 70 DEG to about 140 DEG C.
