The invention relates to a system against driving off without paying at filling stations. This is prevented, according to the invention, by a recording being made of all incoming cars with the aid of a video camera, after which the number is then automatically recognised with the aid of image-processing and image-comparison software in a computer. By comparing the car registration numbers thus obtained with a database which contains the car registration numbers of known cases of drivers who drove off without paying, it is possible to block (disable) the use of a pump by intervention of the service staff or possibly automatically. In addition it is possible for the video images obtained, possibly with the automatically recognised car registration numbers projecting thereinto, to be stored on a video recorder. The instant at which the car registration numbers are recorded can be defined by a detection loop in the road or alternatively by a relatively rapid change in the image recorded by the video camera.
