A method and apparatus for sharpening the surface of a grindstone (1) in a pulp grinder (8). The apparatus comprises a nozzle (3) and a high pressure pump (6) feeding high pressure water through a nozzle (3). The nozzle (3) is connected to a transfer apparatus (4) to move it in the axial direction of the grindstone (1) while the grindstone (1) is being rotated.
