Method of modifying passenger escalator

The method involves using steps having an external profile allowing relative movement between adjacent steps. The profile includes smooth riser face and a straight rear edge. The riser face of each step passes in close proximity to the rear edge of an adjacent step in use. The riser face and rear edge are modified in a complementary manner. The riser face is modified by removing at least part of the riser face. A backing plate (10) is fixed behind the riser, and a cover (20) is fitted to the step. The cover corresponds to the removed part of the riser face and further includes cleats and channels (20b). The rear edge is modified by providing slots in the rear edge, each being complementary to a cleat on the cover.
