<p>Control of inflammation is achieved by control of the level and/or activity of the enzyme heme-oxygenase (HO). A HO inducer is anti-inflammatory (figure 14) and used to treat inflammation, such as chronic inflammatory diseases. A HO inhibitor promotes inflammation and is used to treat immunosuppressed conditions. Alternative, or additional, control of heme-oxygenase activity is achieved by control of nitric oxide levels, elevated levels promoting inflammation.</p> |
