The proposal of the invention is for a process and device for finding an available space in an open-air or covered car park or a "P+R" area. On a resquest for an available parking place, a locating system first establishes the current position of the vehicle and, on that basis, the possible parking places in the area. The information on parking places is preferably provided via the TMC channel of the radio data radio system (RDS) of a car radio. If there are several towns in the area concerned, a suitable choice of town can be made via a keyboard. In addition, town areas with the parking places available therein can be selected in order to find a place as near as possible to the destination. In the case of P+R areas, the public passenger transport links are also indicated, together with further information, e.g. the frequency of the service. The device is integrated into a car radio to allow the use of the radio's reception section, input means and displays.
