PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing a composite material hardly causing thermal deterioration of a fiber in production, capable of retaining high breakage resistance and densely being formed. CONSTITUTION: A three-dimensional structural body (preform) having a prescribed foam is formed of a ceramic fiber and, on the other hand, a starting raw material containing silicon and a carbon source is impregnated with a preform to form a formed body having a prescribed shape and the resultant formed body is substantially heated to a temperature lower than melting point of silicon in a vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere and pressurized. Thereby, reaction sintering of silicon with carbon is carried out to form a SiC matrix and densify the formed body. |
