PURPOSE: To obtain the subject microorganism useful for the biological degradation treatments of waste water by culturing a mixture containing the microorganism having a phenolic compound-degrading ability in a culture medium containing the phenolic compound as a sole carbon source, and subsequently recovering the grown microorganisms. CONSTITUTION: The workers of Nasutitermes takasagoensis are collected on a plate, and ethyl alcohol is poured on the termites to sterilize their surfaces. The termites are washed with a medium containing 0.05% of phenol, and the ethyl alcohol is removed from the surfaces of the termites. The intestines of the termites are picked out with a pincette and subsequently ground in the medium containing 0.05% of phenol to obtain a liquid mixture containing the ground intestines. The liquid mixture is aerobically cultured in a culture medium containing 0.05% of phenol and 0.05% of a yeast extract at 30 deg.C, and the obtained culture mixture containing the multiplied cells is cultured in a culture medium containing a phenolic compound as a sole carbon source, followed by recovering the grown microorganisms. Thus, the microorganism, Pseudomonas cepacia KK01 (FERM BP-4235) having the phenolic compound-degrading ability is obtained. |
