PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a raw material compound for physiologically active substances or functional organic compounds such as liquid crystals, surfactants, coloring matters or optically resolving agents in the field of medicines, agrochemicals, etc. CONSTITUTION: Thisβ-(monosubstituted amino)alcohol compound having trifluoromethyl group of formula I [R<1> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alicyclic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic hydrocarbon group (in which one or more carbon atoms of the carbon skeleton can be replaced with one or more hetero-atoms selected from O, S and N or one or hydrogen atoms thereof can be replaced with one or more substituent groups)], e.g. 3- isopropylamino--1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a 3,3,3-trifluoropropene oxide of formula II with a compound of formula III, opening the ring of the trifluoropropene oxide and adding the resultant compound to the compound of formula III. An optically active compound of formula IV (C* is the asymmetric center) is prepared by reacting an optically active compound of formula V with a compound of formula III.
