PURPOSE: To produce a carbon container without causing the elimination of carbon powder from the container and penetration, etc., of a melt in using thereof for melting, vapor deposition, purification, etc., of a glass, a metal, etc., by constituting the carbon container of a glassy carbon derived from a polycarbodiimide resin. CONSTITUTION: This carbon container comprises a glassy carbon derived from a polycarbodiimide resin. Furthermore, the method for producing the carbon container is to mold the polycarbodiimide resin into the shape of the carbon container, heat the resultant molding at 1000-3000 deg.C temperature in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere and carbonize the molding, etc. The heat-up rate to the carbonization temperature is preferably regulated to <=2C/hr. The resultant carbon container is used as a container for melting glass or a metal, vapor deposition and purification, etc., of the metal. The polycarbodiimide resin can readily be produced by carrying out the condensing reaction of an organic diisocyanate compound in the presence a carbodiimidating catalyst accompanying the removal of carbon dioxide. Polycarbodiimide resins of formulas I and II [(n) is 10-10000] are cited as specific examples of the polycarbodiimide resin. |
