PURPOSE: To allow a solid-state image pickup device to be in compliance with the two TV systems including a laterally wide size by outputting selectively image information of the TV system corresponding to the number of scanning lines of a solid-state image pickup element or image information of standard and laterally long aspect ratio by the TV system corresponding to the number of scanning lines less than the number of scanning lines of the solid-state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION: A clock signal generator 2 provides outputs of a sensor gate clock signalϕS being a read clock signal, vertical transfer clock signalsϕV1 ,ϕV2 and horizontal transfer clock signalsϕH1 ,ϕH2 to a solid-state image pickup element 1. The pulse train of the read clock signal is switch-controlled into the modes of the PAL system and NTSC system of long aspect mode and the standard mode of NTSC system. That is, the picture element area S of the element 1 is divided into a valid picture element area SA1 surrounded by solid lines and an invalid picture element area SB1 shown in hatched lines. The image pickup information of the element 1 is read from the area SA1 for the valid scanning period and the image pickup information of the element 1 is read from the area SB1 for the vertical fly-back period through the switching of the pulse signal.
