PURPOSE: To automatically select an optimum scanning size corresponding to a signal type and to display it by constituting discrimination information expressing the letter box signal of 16:9 to be discriminated from the video signal of 4:3 by a television receiver provided with the aspect ratio of conventional 16:9, and from discrimination information expressing the video signal of 4:3 and the full mode signal of 16:9. CONSTITUTION: A CTL code reading means 9 detects the duty ratio of a control signal and based on the detected result, generates an identification signal 9a expressing the kind of a recording signal. As DC voltage not more than 2.5V identified to be a 4:3 signal by 5 conventional 16:9 TV is superimposed when the identification signal 9a expresses a 16:9 letter box signal, the identification signal becomes the letter box signal so that the lacking at upper and lower parts of a screen is reduced in degree though it is generated, and the round at a center part becomes a complete round. On the other hand, if it is displayed by means of a 16:9 TV corresponding to the 16:9 letter box signal, the optimum scanning size can be obtained. |
