N-METHYLOLACRYLAMIDE CRYSTAL, PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME, AND METHOD OF STORING THE SAME

Crystalline N-methylolacrylamide (N-MAA) produced by the reaction of acrylamide with formaldehyde is washed with water and/or a water-soluble organic medium to give N-MAA crystals substantially free from a formaldehyde-like odor and having a compression strength of at most 3 kg/cm<2> after being left to stand under the load of 200 g/cm<2> for two months. The crystalline N-MAA substantially free from a formaldehyde-like odor is exposed to an atmosphere containing an acidic or basic gas to obtain N-MAA crystals which cause little caking. The crystalline N-MAA substantially free from a formaldehyde-like odor is stored in an atmosphere containing an acidic or basic gas. It has become possible to remove the formaldehyde-like odor of the N-MAA crystals, reduce the caking thereof in the long-term storage, improve the working environment more hygienically, and shorten the process steps.
