Process for selective catalyst particle size control by ex situ grinding to maintain bed fluidization during high temperature operations

A synthesis gas process is described in which agglomerated catalyst, or mixture of catalyst and a solids diluent, are treated ex situ. The solids are withdrawn from the fluidized bed reactor, crushed and broken apart, and a solids fraction of selected particle size distribution is recycled to the reactor at rate sufficient to balance the intrinsic rate of agglomeration of solids particles in the reactor.
