Apparatus for surface mounting electronic components includes a tool body 30 which is detachably mountable on a head block H and an automatic tool changing assembly. The tool body is fixed to a plurality of fixing shafts 41 on which are fixed in order a change plate 31, an intermediate plate 32 and a guiding plate 33. The shafts act as a pressurising member 40 and is supported upwardly by an elastic member 60. A suction nozzle 52 is upwardly supported on a nozzle shaft 51 by an elastic member 70 the shaft engaging the guiding plate 33 and the intermediate plate 32. Aligning jaws 80 are provided which operate by a camming action in response to an up and down movement of the tool body. The automatic tool changing assembly comprises a plurality of cylinders 102 for upward and downward movement and which are connected to a support plate 101 and a second plurality cylinders for horizontal movement. The second cylinders move a receiver 110 which is supported by the support plate 101 and is capable of supporting the change plate 31 of a tool body T. The receiver carries a tool fixing device 120.
