Method and apparatus for converting a digital television image from an interlaced format to a progressive format and applications thereof

The method involves performing a frequency transform by dividing (A) a source digital image consisting of two frames (T1,T2) into groups of N frequency sub-bands. High and low frequency filtering is performed which discriminates a spatial information signal (BF) and a time signal (HF) which represent the structure of the image and its position in the inter-frame time. Recomposition (C) of the frequency spectrum of the source image is achieved by frequency processing with spectral composition of the image structure position allowing generation of a reformed frequency spectrum. An image of progressive format is constructed (D) from the recomposed frequency spectrum in the image or frequency region.
