Treating a charge of particulate matter comprises the use of a series of vertically-arranged symmetrical vessels (11,12,13) each contg. a rotating fluidised reaction chamber (21,22,23). Raw materials are introduced to the first (21) chamber through an inlet (31) which may be opened or closed. The reactors (21,22,23) are linked (33,34) by pipes which may be closed by a valve (37). The charge is introduced (31) to the first chamber (21) by air suction, and is subsequently transferred through the other chambers (22,23) where it is treated in air at different temps.. In the second and subsequent reactors, the charge is treated differently to the treatment to which it was subjected in the preceding chamber.
