Control of a deep-well pump 5 is effected by means of a microcomputer 1 which can record the power consumption from the motor 4 of the pump. In the method, the power consumption Pti is recorded with a closed valve 11 in the outlet line of the pump for a given pumping medium, and so is the idling power Pdr of the pump. From this and a constant smaller than 1, the computer 1 can calculate the lower permissible limit value Pmin for the power consumption of the pump during operation with this pumping medium. In this way, the sliding bearings of the pump can be protected against damage from dry running in an easier and safer manner in the pumping of media with different viscosity and specific gravity. <IMAGE>
