The prosthesis consists of a base (11) with a flat surface (12) for attaching to a partially resectioned bone, and a shank (15) which is implanted in the medullary canal of a finger or toe bone, the base and shank cooperating to form an articulated joint. The shank is of standard size and slightly smaller than the average dimensions of the bone canals and is fixed in place by one of a series of sleeves (20) of different sizes to suit different bone canals. The shank and sleeves have matching conical surfaces with an angle of taper of between 3 and 6 deg. and pref. 5 deg. The base and shank are made from an aluminium ceramic material and the sleeves can be made from the same material or from stainless steel or titanium, and the surfaces in contact with bone are coated with calcium hydroxyapatite.
