<p>A safety penetrating instrument (220) for penetrating an anatomical cavity wall (W) to gain access to an anatomical cavity includes a penetrating member (202) having a distal end (225) for penetrating the anatomical cavity wall (W), a distally biased safety member (227) having a distal end movable between an extended position where the safety member (227) distal end protrudes distally from the penetrating member (202) distal end to protect the penetrating member (202) distal end and a retracted position. The instrument includes an extending mechanism for moving the safety member (227) to the extended position and for permitting the safety member (227) to move proximally toward the retracted position, a mechanism for manually moving (224) the safety member (227) proximally and a locking mechanism (208) for locking the safety member (227) in the retracted position. A releasing mechanism (282) is responsive to distal movement of the cannula (226).</p> |
