A new group of cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics, the A54145 antibiotics, which have the general formula: wherein: R is hydrogen, C8-C18-alkyl, optionally substituted C8-C18-alkanoyl or C8-C18-alkenoyl; (Lys-R<1>) represents -NH(CH2)4CH(NHR<1>)CO-; R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen or an amino-protecting group; or R and R<2>, taken together, represent a C8-C18-alkylidene group; X is Ile or Val; and Y is Glu or 3-MG; and their salts, are antibacterial agents or intermediates to such agents. The A54145 active compounds improve growth performance in animals; thus, feed compositions for promoting growth in animals such as poultry and methods for increasing growth in animals using these compositions, are also provided.
