Prepn. of highly pure naphthylene-1,5-diamine (I) comprises (a) treating polyurethane and/or polyurethane-polyurea based on naphthylene-1,5-diisocyanate (II) and opt. (I) with water at pH 8.5-14 and 170-250 deg C and opt. 6-100 bar in the presence of metal (hydr)oxide(s) (III) in an amt. at least equiv. to the urethane gps.; and (b) filtering the ppte. after cooling the reaction mixt..
