PURPOSE: To enhance color purity in the wave length on the red side by containing at least Er and Sn as a metal element constituting metal or a metal halide in a metal halide lamp. CONSTITUTION: A luminescent part 1 and sealing parts 2a, 2b of a metal halide lamp are made of quartz glass. Mo foils 3a, 3b are sealed in the sealing parts 2a, 2b, each one end of the Mo foils 3a, 3b is connected to each of outside lead wires 4a, 4b through platinum, and the other ends are connected to a pair of facing electrodes 5a, 5b through platinum. Mercury and noble gas are sealed at a pressure of 50-300Torr in a luminescent tube of the lamp, and at least Er and Sn as a metal element constituting metal or a metal halide are sealed. Er gives a weak luminescent line near 622, 630nm, and Sn gives the effects of suppression of mercury luminescent line and increase in the base line of a spectrum. The sealing amount of Er is 0.2×10<-6> mol/cc or more, and that of Sn is 0.5×10<-6> mol/cc or more.
