The invention calls for aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 2 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule to be manufactured by reacting saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule with carbon dioxide at temperatures of 100 to 600 DEG C and pressures of 0.1 to 20 MPa in the presence of catalysts containing one or more metals from group VIA, VIIA or VIIIA of the periodic table of the elements.
