An interior of a casing (2) of an electrostatic precipitator (1) is compartmented by square pipe steels (11) into an incoming chamber (4) and an outgoing chamber (26) which communicate with each other, and electrode pins (23) are inserted into the square pipe steels (11). Formed in the casing (2) is a guide passage (14) by which interiors of the square pipe steels (11) communicate with the incoming chamber (4). When air containing mist or the like is introduced into the square pipe steels (11) from the incoming chamber (4) with voltage applied to the square pipe steels (11) and the electrode pins (23), fine particles such as mist in the air adhere to the inside surfaces of the square pipe steels (11) so that fine particles such as mist are removed from the air. A part of the cleaned air is returned to the incoming chamber (4) through the guide passage (14) to be mixed in the incoming chamber (4) with the air which contains mist or the like. As a result, the air introduced into the square pipe steels (11) is made low in content of mist or the like.
