Comb polymers are derived from macromonomers of formula (I): X-ÄCH2CH2Üa-ÄCH2CHR1Üb-ÄCH2CR2R3Üc-B (I) X = residue of initiator, pref. 1-50 C alkyl residue; R1 = 1-18 C (pref. 1-10 C, most pref. 1-4 C) alkyl; R2, R3 = 1-8 C alkyl; B = 3-12 C alkene end gp.; a = 0 mol.% if c is more than 0 mol.%; a+b = 100 mol.% of the monomers in (I), with a≤80 mol.%, or b+c = 100 mol.% of the monomer in (I); if a = 0, R1 becomes R1' (R1' = 2-18 C alkyl); by (a) converting the end gp. -B into a corresp. protic gp. -A-OH (cpd. (II)) using known methods., (b) acylating the intermediate with a reagent contg. a (meth)acryloyl gp. to give the corresp. macromonomer (IV) with an end. gp. of formula -A-O-CO-CR4=CH2 (R4 = H or Me), and (c) radical copolymerising (IV) with monomers selected from 1-28 C alkyl (meth)acrylates, functional comonomers, vinyl esters of fatty acids and vinylaromatics.
