A polystyrene surface has integrally bonded thereto a coating applied from a solution in a solvent for the coating but not for polystyrene, which coating comprises an acrylate- or methacrylate-type resin or a mixture of such resin and a cellulose ester, the coating preferably comprising from 100 to 1 per cent of a thermoplastic-type acrylate or methacrylate resin and from 0 to 99 per cent of a cellulose ester, which may be cellulose acetate, butyrate, acetate butyrate or acetate propionate. The solvent may be a composition comprising 3 to 25 per cent of a solvent selected from a group consisting of aliphatic ketones and esters, toluene and aliphatic substances other than nitromethane having a boiling range below 120 DEG C.; 5 to 35 per cent of a solvent selected from the group consisting of nitromethane, aliphatic alcohols and lactates having less than 6 p carbon atoms; and 20 to 40 per cent of a substance selected from the group consisting of diacetone alcohol, lactates having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms, glycol ethers and esters. The coating composition may be prepared by refluxing an acrylate or methacrylate monomer with a polymerization catalyst, particularly benzoyl peroxide, in such a solvent composition. |
