Magnetic compass for e.g. installation in motor vehicle

The magnetic compass employs a pair of Hall sensors (1,2) spaced apart and forming part of an IC chip (4) with individual output terminals for connection to a signal evaluation module which is conveniently incorporated in the same chip. The influence of the earth's magnetic field is concentrated by the ferromagnetic conductors (6,7,8,9) which are arranged to resolve the field in two directions mutually at right angles enabling a sine and cosine response over a full rotation for a simple computation of compass direction. A third Hall sensor (3) is positioned on the chip (4) in order to facilitate a zero alignment of the instrument.
