A control system is disclosed for hydraulic drives, in particular hydraulic cylinders, in which the valve that controls the hydraulic medium flow paths between the drive, the hydraulic medium source and a tank may be controlled by an electronic control system. Drive state variables are detected by a pressure sensor and by a circuit that differentiates the pressure measurement value in time. The pressure change signal is used to drive the valve, to improve control characteristics by means of a state control system, to attenuate vibrations in the flow medium or to reduce knocking noises produced by punching, nibbling or shearing machines.
