Multistage change speed gearbox with switchable idling shaft

The multistage transmission (2) has an input shaft (12) and a main shaft (16) as an axial extension of the input shaft. An idling shaft (24,26) is provided for the main shaft. The input, main and idling shafts all have gear wheels engaged with each other to provide the stages of the transmission. The idling shaft is divided. There is a device for connecting its two parts (24,26). The main shaft and one part of the idling shaft are fitted in an intermediate wall (8). In normal forward drive, the second part of the idling shaft is uncoupled and does not turn. This reduces the masses which have to be synchronised.
