<p>A process and an apparatus for treating waste containing heavy metals to make it harmless. The process adds an iron oxide or a material that forms an iron oxide when heated in the presence of oxygen, and a reductant, such as carbon, to the waste. The resultant mixture is heated by a dry method to form ferrite. The heavy metals are immobilized in the ferrite, thereby converting the waste to a safe and useful ferrite material. The treating apparatus comprises a reactor (18), material suppliers (10, 12, 14, 16), a stirrer (22), a radiation heater (20), a device (26) for recovering volatile metals, and a dust collector (28).</p> |
