摘要 PURPOSE:To enhance the high-speed responsiveness and contrast ratio of the liquid crystal optical element and to facilitate the formation of the element to a larger area by subjecting the liquid crystal optical element to a bending and deforming treatment, thereby orienting a ferroelectric liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal optical element 1 formed by crimping the ferroelectric liquid crystal by two sheets of flexible substrates provided with electrodes is subjected to the bending and deforming treatment while the element is continuously moved by using preferably >=1 pieces of free revolving rollers or is continuously moved between >=2 pieces of free revolving rollers 2 and 3. After the unoriented element 1 is heated by a heater 7, the element is subjected to the bending and deforming treatment while the element is cooled by the rollers 2, 3 from preferably the temp. at which the liquid crystal (e.g.: The compd. expressed by formula) exhibits an isotropic phase down to the temp. at which the crystal exhibits a liquid crystal phase such as smectic A phase or chiral smectic C phase.
