The vending machine has a key pad (2) to select and validate purchases. A card reader (4) accepts a smart card or a pre-paid card of the type issued by telephone companies. The payment is debited from the card by removing a number of prepaid units from the card. To debit the card a computer composes a number from the user's selection code and delivers a number of impulses to debit the card. The number is sent over the telephone lines to a computer which identifies the vending machine and maintains stock records. The selected item is delivered to a chamber with a door (1b) to allow the user to remove the selected item. The front of the machine has free space to carry advertising material.
