Endothelin antagonists based on sulphonamide having the formula: <IMAGE> where R is substituted or unsubstituted naphthyl, R4 and R5 are each separately hydrogen, halo, hydroxyl, cyano, nitro, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, alkoxy and other organic radicals, or R4 and R5 are jointly alkylene or alkenylene, making up a saturated, unsaturated or aromatic ring of four to eight members with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, and one of X and Y is N and the other is O. These compounds are inhibitors of the activity of endothelin and are useful in the treatment of hypertension.
