PURPOSE:To obtain a backlight whose luminance is high, where light absorption is little, and which is light in weight and thin by using an air layer and a long prism instead of a light transmission plate. CONSTITUTION:The long prism 1 controlling the direction of light by bending a light beam 65 outgoing from a fluorescent tube 2 is arranged in parallel with the fluorescent tube 2 near the fluorescent tube 2. A reflector 3 is provided under a liquid crystal display element through an air layer 4. The end of the reflector 3 on the fluorescent tube 2 side is connected to the upper part of the prism 1. The base of the prism 1 is arranged in parallel with the surface of the base plate of the liquid crystal display element on the reflector 3. A diffusing plate is arranged between the liquid crystal display element and the air layer 4. The light beam 65 outgoing from the fluorescent tube 2 is guided to a distant place and the luminance becomes uniform on all the surface of a display screen by the prism 1. |
