<p>The cable core (13), comprising a number of resin-coated optical fibres (12) in a tube (11) of e.g. nylon, polyester or polypropylene filled with gel or water-absorbent material (14), is surrounded by a wrapping (15) of fibre-reinforced plastic elements. These are mfd. from e.g. aramide, polyester, glass or C fibres (16) buried in unpolymerised resin and are wound helically around the tube with sepg. thin ribbons (18) of low-adhesion material. The plastic is then polymerised so that the elements have a higher Young's modulus and lower thermal expansion coefft. than the tube and sheath (19).</p> |
