The road use charge levying apparatus includes a satellite positioning system which precisely determines the vehicle position. The vehicle has an associated receiver. A smart card reader for credit cards is arranged in the vehicle. A transmitter and receiver arranged in the vehicle connect the smart card reader to stations of a mobile radio network. A stationary computer is connected to the positioning system and to the mobile radio network. The computer calculates the charges at regular intervals according to distances covered by the vehicle as detected by the positioning system.
