The device (10) for laying cable consists of a lifting device (16), a holding device (17) and a lowering device (18). Guides (31, 32) and supports (36, 37) are attached both to the lifting device (16) and to the lowering device (18). To lay cable in cable troughs sealed by covers, the first cover of the cable trough is removed, then the device (10) is placed on the cable trough in such a way that the lifting device (16) reaches underneath the second cover. Driven by a motor, the device moves forward with the covers being lifted up on one side, held and lowered. Through the resulting gap between cover and cable trough edge the cable (11) lying alongside the cable trough is inserted into the cable trough using the cable guide (14).
