The maximum possible fresh air stream has access to the unfired cylinder (1) in the IC engine. The fresh air stream is controlled according to prevailing marginal conditions. The operating cylinder which is at times unfired, has a fresh air supply pipe (11) with a blocking element (12) which forms a by-pass to the throttle (10). The fresh air supply pipe opens downstream of a blocking valve (13) into the suction channel of the unfired cylinder.
