The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for cleaning contaminated, water-containing substance, comprising the following steps: mixing the substance with a water-insoluble solvent which is suitable for dissolving the contaminant present in the substance; and separating the mixture formed in the previous step into at least two fractions, the first fraction comprising the solvent and the contaminants dissolved therein, and the second fraction comprising the remainder of the substance. Preferably, the mixture is held in a vessel for a certain time between the mixing and the separation into fractions. According to another preferred embodiment, the substance is at least separated into a substance fraction, a solvent fraction and a water fraction (aqueous fraction).
