A diagnostic data set is first generated via an image-generating, preoperative diagnosis method and stored digitally in an image database. The operation plan is generated in a central control unit using the diagnostic data set and an operation path determined. The operation path (10) is generated by selecting two-dimensional diagnostic images from the database at freely selectable distances and orientations. During the operation the microscope, which is mounted on a motorised carrier system is driven along the operation path and the selected diagnostic images can be optionally presented in the observation lens of the microscope independently of the actual viewing field position.
