PURPOSE:To produce a steel sheet for can, excellent in resource recycling property as well as in various properties, by using, as a material for a steel sheet for can, a cold rolled sheet of an extralow carbon steel reduced in impurity content and forming various surface treated films on the surface. CONSTITUTION:An as-cold-rolled steel sheet, which has a composition consisting of, by weight, <0.004% C, <0.02% S, <0.2% Al, <0.008% N, 0.005-0.1% Ti and/or Nb, and the balance Fe and also has a crystalline grain structure in which the ratio of major axis to minor axis in a crystalline grain is regulated to >=4 on the average, is used. An Sn plating film is formed on the surface of this steel sheet, or a chromate film, a phosphate film, and a chromium plating film are formed on the Sn plating film and a chromium hydrated oxide film is further formed on these films, or further, a resin film is formed at least on one side. By using a cold rolled steel sheet of extralow carbon content as material and also optimizing the balance among C content, Ti and Nb contents, and crystalline grain axial ratio, the surface treated steel sheet for can, excellent in resource recycling property as well as in ironing property and flange workability, can be obtained.
